Dear Friends,    We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2012 New Issues Poetry Prize: Marni Ludwig for her manuscript Pinwheel.  Ludwig wins a $2,000 award and publication of her manuscript in the spring of 2013.   Marni Ludwig    Marni Ludwig holds degrees from Sarah Lawrence College, Columbia University and Washington University in St. Louis.  Her poems have appeared in Boulevard, FIELD, Gulf Coast, High Chair, JERRY, Western Humanities Review and other journals. Her chapbook, Little Box of Cotton and Lightning, was selected by Susan Howe for a 2011 Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship. She lives in St. Louis and Brooklyn. "Marni Ludwig has a vast and original mind and spirit, which along with her quiet, sometimes sharp humor, and her tenderness, implicate everyone.  Her skill is like a good horse, who becomes one with the rider and with her wild, unheard of travels.  Here is the real thing."        -Jean Valentine, from the judge's citation   Also accepted for publication: Ain't No Grave by T.J. Jarrett  to appear in the fall of 2013    The New Issues Poetry Prize is awarded annually for a full-length debut collection of poetry. The judge for the 2013 New Issues Poetry Prize is David St. John. Guidelines are available on our website.  Congratulations, Susanna Childress!   Entering the House of Awe Susanna Childress won the Society of Midland Authors Award for Poetry for her collection Entering the House of Awe. Congratulations, Kevin Fenton!   Merit Badges Kevin Fenton won the Friends of American Writers Literary Award for Fiction for his novel Merit Badges. Dear Friends,    We're happy to announce the release of our spring titles. Corey Marks' Radio Tree, Andrew Allport's the body | of space | in the shape of the human, and Shara Lessley's Two-Headed Nightingale are all available to order. Kevin Fenton's Merit Badges has just won the Friends of American Writers Award and is currently a finalist for the Minnesota Book Awards. Khaled Mattawa's Tocqueville recently won the 2012 Poetry Center Book Award.  Rachel Eliza Griffiths' Mule & Pear was the first book of poetry to ever be awarded the Black Caucus of the American Library Association's Literary Award. Jeff Hoffman's Journal of American Foreign Policy received an honorable mention from the Drake Emerging Writer Prize, and is currently a finalist for the California Book Awards. Mandy Keifetz's Flea Circus also received an honorable mention from the Grub Street Prize. Congratulations New Issues authors! We would be honored if you would join us for the Gwen Frostic Reading Series. The first reading of the series features novelist Kevin Fenton and poet Rachel Eliza Griffiths. It will be held Thursday, February 2nd at 8:00 p.m. in WMU's Bernhard Center, rooms 157 & 159. This reading series usually draws a large crowd, so we encourage you to arrive early. The reading is free, and last approximately 45 minutes. Books will be available to purchase, and the authors will be happy to sign their works.   Hope you can join us!   Kevin Fenton's first novel, Merit Badges (New Issues), won the AWP Prize for the Novel. Publishers Weekly writes,  "An impressive vitality, droll wit, and affecting nostalgia lift Fenton's first novel." His fiction has appeared in the Northwest Review, the Laurel Review, and the Emprise Review. His writing on graphic design has been anthologized in Looking Closer 2 and Emigre No. 70: The Look Back Issue. He holds an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota and a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. A Cave Canem Fellow, she is the recipient of fellowships from Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, Vermont Studio Center, New York State Summer Writers Institute, the Cave Canem Foundation and others. Dear Friends,   We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2012 Green Rose Prize: Jaswinder Bolina for his manuscript Phantom Camera.  Bolina wins a $2,000 award and publication of his manuscript in the spring of 2013.   Jaswinder Bolina   Jaswinder Bolina is the author of Carrier Wave, winner of the 2006 Colorado Prize for Poetry. His recent work has appeared in Black Warrior Review, Columbia Poetry Review, the Offending Adam, and in the Best American Poetry 2011. He currently lives and teaches in Athens, Ohio, as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of English at Ohio University.    Also accepted for publication: Slip by Cullen Bailey Burns to appear in the fall of 2013    The Green Rose Prize is awarded to an author who has previously published at least one full-length book of poems. Winners are chosen by the editors of New Issues Press. Nov. 1 "We loved Scott Blackwood's 2009 novel We Agreed to Meet Just Here ... and we weren't the only ones. Last week, Blackwood received a $50,000 Whiting Writers' Award, given annually to emerging writers. The Whiting Selection Committee singled Blackwood's novel out for "its marvelous compression, and the elegiac, ominous yearning, the fugue of loss and love and death that pervades the book." The former Austinite received his MFA in Creative Writing from Texas State; he now directs the Creative Writing Program at Chicago's Roosevelt University. Blackwood was one of four fiction writers recognized by the foundation this year; ten writers from fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and playwriting are recognized annually for their "exceptional talent and promise." Previous recipients include Denis Johnson, David Foster Wallace, Deborah Eisenberg and Padgett Powell - not too shabby company to be keeping."
